Tere means hello in Eesti

My name is Thea (she.her). I'm an Australian-Canadian with Eesti (Estonian) heritage. Was it a coincidence that my interest in sauna and Estonia arose simultaneously? I have spent many hours in saunas, giving me the space for Uuviht to emerge.

Uuviht was created to bring Estonian sauna culture to Canada, with an adventuous and curious approach.

 

Uu: a playful reference to the Estonian language, which is redolent with double vowels

Viht: the Estonian sauna whisk, usually made of bunches of oak or birch branches, and used by sauna-goers to slap each others bodies

I am building Uuviht to reflect strong values of

• Collaboration

• Accessibility (financial, physical, and socio-cultural)

• Diversion and Inclusivity for (but not limited to): 2SLQBTQIA+, disabled, neurodiverse, racially and ethnically diverse communities

 

I hope to sit with you on a cedar bench soon
